Tony Award winner Rachel Bay Jones (Dear Evan Hansen) will take on the role of Diana Goodman in an upcoming presentation of Next to Normal at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Performances of the Pulitzer-winning musical will run as part of the Washington, D.C. venue’s Broadway Center Stage series January 29–February 2, 2020.
The Broadway Center Stage lineup—the Center's third—also includes semi-staged concert presentations of Footloose (October 9–13) and a Marc Bruni-helmed Bye Bye Birdie (April 22–26).
Additionally, two national tours of current Broadway productions will make their official premieres as part of the Center’s 2019–2020 season: the Lincoln Center Theater revival of My Fair Lady (December 17–January 19) and the Aaron Sorkin-penned stage adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird (August 25–September 27). The national tours of Hamilton, Come From Away, Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Once On This Island are also slated to take the Eisenhower Theater and Opera House stages.
In summer 2020, the Kennedy Center will host an exclusive U.S. engagement of A Monster Calls from London's Old Vic and director Sally Cookson, as well as Nia Vardalos' stage adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s Tiny Beautiful Things; the latter was also recently announced to play Chicago's Victory Gardens Theater in the 2019–2020 season.
Other titles in the new roster include Palestinian writer Amir Nizar Zubai's Grey Rock, Cliff Cardinal's solo show Huff, the U.S. premiere of Scottish playwright Mary Wells' solo show Heroine, a Female Soldier's Story, and a Cuban adaptation of Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito—each part of the World Stages series.
