Opera Saratoga’s 2019 Summer Festival will feature three works, including the world premiere of Ellen West, a chamber opera from Ricky Ian Gordon and Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Frank Bidart.
Composer Gordon and librettist Bidart’s opera explores the inner struggle of a young woman battling a severe eating disorder. Jennifer Zetlan will sing the title role, with Keith Phares as her psychiatrist. The production will be directed by Emma Griffin and conducted by Lidiya Yankovskaya.
The season will first open with Donizetti’s La Fille du Régiment, marking the first presentation of the comedy at the New York venue in 17 years. Artistic and General Director Lawrence Edelson will helm the new production, featuring Santiago Ballerini in the high C-laden role of Tonio. Andrew Bisantz will conduct.
Rounding out the lineup is Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, in an East Coast premiere of the production from Chicago-based Manual Cinema. The staging, which incorporates shadow puppetry and various visual effects, will feature members of Opera Saratoga’s Young Artist Program and the Children’s Chorus of the Glens Falls Symphony.
The three operas will run in repertory at the Spa Little Theatre in Spa State Park June 29 through July 13, 2019.
