Billy Elliot, The Musical earned 15 nominations, the most of any show of the season. Billy Elliot and Mel Brooks' The Producers are now tied for the most Tony nominations ever received by one show.
Other shows that fared well include Next to Normal (11), Hair (8), Shrek the Musical (8), Mary Stuart (7), The Norman Conquests (7), God of Carnage (6) and Joe Turner's Come and Gone (6).
Best Play nominees include Dividing the Estate, God of Carnage, reasons to be pretty and 33 Variations, while Billy Elliot, Next to Normal, Rock of Ages and Shrek the Musical will vie for the Best Musical prize.
Matthew Warchus received two nominations in the Best Direction of a Play Category; the British director was nominated for his work in both God of Carnage and The Norman Conquests. His competitors in the field include Phyllida Lloyd (Mary Stuart) and Bartlett Sher (Joe Turner's Come and Gone). Kevin Adams also received two nominations in the same category: Best Lighting Design for Hair and Next to Normal. His competitors include Howell Binkley (West Side Story) and Rick Fisher (Billy Elliot).
The entire cast of God of Carnage received Tony nominations for their performances: Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, Marcia Gay Harden and James Gandolfini. And, Broadway veteran Angela Lansbury received her sixth Tony nomination (for her performance in Blithe Spirit). Only two other actresses have received as many nominations: Audra McDonald (six) and Julie Harris (ten). The nominees for the 2009 Tony Awards follow:

Winners of the four non-competitive Tony Awards categories were announced May 4. Composer-lyricist Jerry Herman (Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre), Virginia's Signature Theatre (Regional Theatre Tony Award), longtime press agent Shirley Herz (Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theatre) and actress/writer Phyllis Newman (Isabelle Stevenson Award) will all be honored at the 63rd annual Tony Awards ceremony.
The 2009 Tony Awards will be held at Radio City Music Hall June 7. CBS-TV will broadcast the event live.
