The Broadway revival of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s My Fair Lady officially opens April 19 at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre. The Lincoln Center Theater production, directed by Tony winner Bartlett Sher, stars Lauren Ambrose and Harry Hadden-Paton as Eliza Doolittle and Professor Henry Higgins. The production began previews March 15.
Based on the play Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw—which, in turn, has its roots in the Greek myth of the same name—the show follows a flower seller of the London streets who wishes to work in a proper floral shop. When she overhears linguistics professor Henry Higgins wager that he can make any woman pass for a high society socialite, she seeks him out and offers to be his subject.
This mounting marks the show’s fourth revival of the 1956 musical. Joining Ambrose and Hadden-Paton on stage are two-time Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz (Catch Me If You Can, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) as Eliza’s father Alfred P. Doolittle, Tony winner Diana Rigg (Medea) as Mrs. Higgins, and Jordan Donica (The Phantom of the Opera, Hamilton national tour) as Freddy Eynsford-Hill.
