After a world premiere at Boston’s Emerson Colonial Theatre, Moulin Rouge! is ready to bring the spectacle to Broadway. The musical adaptation of the 2001 Baz Luhrmann film will play the Al Hirschfeld Theatre beginning June 28, 2019, with opening night set for July 25.
The Hirschfeld is currently home to the long-running Tony winner Kinky Boots, which, as previously announced, will end its Broadway run April 7.
Set to star in the Broadway engagement are Aaron Tveit and and Tony Award winner Karen Olivo, who will reprise their performances as Christian and Satine, respectively, from the Boston mounting. Also returning will be Tony nominee Danny Burstein as Harold Zidler, Tony and Olivier nominee Sahr Ngaujah as Toulouse-Lautrec, Tam Mutu as the Duke of Monroth, Ricky Rojas as Santiago, and Robyn Hurder as Nini.
Alex Timbers (this season’s Beetleuice) directs the production, which features a book by John Logan and a score comprised of the original songs and pop standards heard in the movie as well as new hits released in the 17 years since its premiere.
