The Center Theatre Group revival of August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, as well as For the Record: Scorsese – American Crime Requiem at the Wallis, and the Geffen Playhouse production of The Legend of Georgia McBride are among the most nominated productions for the 28th annual L.A. Stage Alliance Awards, which were announced November 2.
The ceremony will take place January 29, 2018, at the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles. The L.A. Stage Alliance administers the Ovation Awards.
Center Theatre Group led with a total of 31 nominations. The theatre’s acclaimed revival of Wilson’s 1984 play Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom received seven nominations, including Direction of a Play (Phylicia Rashad), Lead Actor in a Play (Jason Dirden), and Best Production of a Play. The world premiere of Rajiv Joseph’s The Archduke, received five nominations including Original Play.
The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts followed with 19 nominations overall. The cinematic revue For the Record: Scorsese – American Crime Requiem earned 10 nominations, including Lead Actress in a Musical (Carmen Cusack) and Best Production of a Musical. The Wallis’ revival of Merrily We Roll Along received three Ovation nominations, including Best Direction (Michael Arden), as well as Lead Actress in a Musical (Donna Vivino), and Featured Actress in a Musical (Whitney Bashor).
The Geffen Playhouse, which was also nominated for 19 Ovation Awards this season, earned eight for The Legend of Georgia McBride, and six for the world premiere of Anna Ziegler’s Actually, including Original Play.
