The legendary Tyner, a onetime John Coltrane sideman, won his fifth Grammy, in the Best Instrumental Album, Individual or Group category, for Illuminations. The all-star album also features saxophonist Gary Bartz, trumpeter Terence Blanchard, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Lewis Nash.
Wilson won the award for Best Jazz Vocal Album for R.S.V.P (Rare Songs, Very Personal). The singer won for the first time since 1964, when she was honored in the rhythm and blues category.
Hancock brought home his tenth Grammy, winning the Best Jazz Instrumental Solo category for "Speak Like a Child," a track from his album With All My Heart.
Other winners included guitarist Bill Frisell, for Best Contemporary Jazz Album, and bassist Charlie Haden, for Best Latin Jazz Album. Maria Schneider won for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album for Concert in the Garden, a CD sold only over the Internet.
