Tony and Emmy Award winners Laurie Metcalf and John Lithgow will return to Broadway this season in Hillary and Clinton, a new play by A Doll's House, Part 2 author Lucas Hnath. Joe Mantello will direct the production, which begins previews March 16, 2019, ahead of an April 18 opening at a theatre to be announced.
The play aims to explore the politics of marriage and gender roles as Hillary, a former First Lady, is at odds with her husband Bill and her campaign manager Mark as she attempts to salvage her bid for President of the United States during the 2008 primaries. Sound familiar?
The play premiered at Chicago's Victory Gardens Theater in 2016 before heading to Philadelphia, Richmond, and Dallas. In each of those productions, the role of Hillary was played by a black woman.
The Scott Rudin production will feature sets by Chloe Lamford, costumes by Ann Roth, and lighting design by Hugh Vanstone.
Metcalf earned a Tony Award earlier this year for the Mantello-helmed Three Tall Women—her second consecutive win after starring as Nora in A Doll's House, Part 2 (both produced by Rudin). She also earned her first Oscar nod this year for Lady Bird and can be seen on the Roseanne spin-off The Conners.
Lithgow, a Tony winner for The Changing Room and Sweet Smell of Success, last appeared on Broadway in his solo show Stories By Heart. He won his fifth Emmy Award last year for his performance as another political leader—Winston Churchill—in The Crown.
