Tony Award nominee Johanna Day, recently seen on Broadway in The Nap, will lead the world premiere of Joan at HERE Arts Center this winter. The new play by Emmy-nominated writer Stephen Belber (Match, The Laramie Project) is the story of a woman and a look at the moments in which who we are and who we want to be don't align.
As previously announced, the world premiere of Joan will be presented by New York City-based theatre company Colt Couer, with direction by Artistic Director Adrienne Campbell-Holt. Performances will begin January 19, 2019, and will continue through February 16.
Joining Day (Sweat, Proof) in the production will be Adam Harrington (How to Live on Earth) and Marjan Neshat (Quantico, Julius Caesar).
"Joan is restless but gracious; she’s loving, but she’s a jerk," read production notes. "A daughter, sister, lover, mother, artist, and citizen, Joan is a flawed and wandering soul seeking the authentic in a world that gravitates the other way. She lives, and then she dies."
Belber's plays include Geomtery of Fire (Rattlestick Playwrights Theater); Fault Lines (Naked Angels/Cherry Lane Theater); A Small, Melodramatic Story (LAByrinth Theater Company); McReele (Roundabout Theatre Company); and Match, seen on Broadway in 2004.
