Directed by Sheldon Epps, the play will make its West Coast premiere Aug. 28-Oct. 4 at the California venue. Opening night is scheduled for Sept. 4.

Williams will portray the role of Harriet Eason with Monette Magrath as Jane, Armando McClain as Henrique, Maceo Oliver as Joel, Tyler Pierce as Brian Easton and Sybyl Walker as Bia Ferrera.

The Night Is a Child, according to press notes, "draws on magical realism, Samba, and the cultural pulse of Brazil to tell the tale of one mother and her family, as they seek understanding, redemption and acceptance after a tragedy leaves them torn apart. Ultimately, it's a story of healing, hope and letting go."

In a statement director Epps said, "I am so happy to be directing this fascinating play by one of my favorite collaborators and a respected and valuable colleague. Charles has created a dynamic and colorful tapestry for this moving and incredibly topical story. We’ve been able to bring together a tremendous cast, which will be superbly led by JoBeth Williams, an actress who I’ve long hoped would grace the stage of the Playhouse. I know that she and her equally gifted cast members will deliver this play with great skill and passion for the material. I look forward to a rewarding artistic journey with this material and this fine company of actors."
