Timothy Sheader’s Olivier Award-winning production of Jesus Christ Superstar will launch a North American tour in fall 2019—about a decade after the last tour of the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice rock opera.
The production, directed by Sheader and choreographed by Drew McOnie, premiered in London at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre in 2016. It went on to win the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival and returned to the venue the following year.
The staging is first set to make its North American premiere this month at Lyric Opera of Chicago, with performances running April 27 through May 20. The company includes Heath Saunders as Jesus, Ryan Shaw as Judas, and Jo Lampert as Mary Magdalene.
Casting for the tour will be announced at a later date.
The news arrives on the heels of NBC’s live concert presentation of the musical, which aired from Brooklyn’s Marcy Armory April 1 (Easter Sunday). Leading the cast were John Legend, Sara Bareilles, and Brandon Victor Dixon.
