Industry News Grosses Analysis: Broadway’s Moulin Rouge! Sets House Record The new musical adaptation of the 2001 movie grossed just shy of $2 million in the week ending August 4.

Spectacular spectacular news for Moulin Rouge!: the new musical set a house record at its Broadway home, the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. The stage adaptation of the Baz Luhrmann movie officially opened July 25, and in its first full week post-opening, the production grossed $1,987,914 (106.7 percent of its potential). This marks the highest gross for an eight-performance week at the venue.

Only two other shows topped the new frontrunner: The Lion King (making $2,488,843) and Hamilton (leading the boards with $3,066,826).

A handful of shows are preparing to end their Broadway bows this month; among them is The Prom, which boosted its weekly gross by over $70,000 to reach $809,522 (its highest of the year). The musical comedy will play its final performance at the Longacre Theatre August 11.
