In celebration of the Leonard Bernstein centennial, Santa Fe Opera opened its 62nd season June 29 with the company premiere of Candide. The new production is directed by Laurent Pelly. Performances continue in Santa Fe, New Mexico, through August 25.
Candide, based on Voltaire’s novella of the same name, features music by Bernstein; lyrics by Richard Wilbur, Stephen Sondheim, John La Touche, Lillian Hellman, Dorothy Parker, and Bernstein; and a book by Hugh Wheeler.
The production stars Alek Shrader as Candide, Brenda Rae as Cunegonde, Helene Schneiderman as the Old Lady, and Kevin Burdette as Voltaire/Pangloss/Cacambo/Martin.
