The Paris premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s global hit The Phantom of the Opera, which was to open October 13 at the Mogador Theatre, has been postponed until a date to be determined after a fire broke out in the theatre’s basement September 25.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze, however, the stage floor and various set pieces were damaged. The full extent of the damage to the set and the theatre itself are currently being assessed.
The production celebrates the musical’s 30th anniversary. Preview performances were to begin October 4.

“Our link to The Phantom remains strong and we all stay ready and united to give the theater back to its audiences,” said Laurent Bentata, managing director of Stage Entertainment France, in a statement.
Sierra Boggess, the American actress who earned acclaim for playing Christine, is set to reprise her performance in the Paris premiere, which marks the first time the musical will be presented in French. Her co-star is Gardar Thor Cortes, who also starred as the Phantom in the Hamburg production of Love Never Dies.
A statement on the official page for the French-language premiere says that ticket holders may seek reimbursement at their point of sale.
Boggess posted that the Phantom cast offered an impromptu performance outside the Paris Opera House, where the musical is famously set.
