59E59 Theaters has unveiled its 2019 winter programming, and the lineup includes the Off-Broadway premiere of Joanna Murray-Smith’s thriller Switzerland, and a play about Judy Holliday starring Andréa Burns.
Switzerland, a drama from Australian playwright Murray-Smith, pits crime novelist Patricia Highsmith in a game of cat and mouse against a young man who has come to visit her in the Swiss Alps. The play will begin performances at 59E59 Theaters February 7 in a production from The Hudson Stage Company (separate from the current London production). Dan Foster directs, and Daniel Petzold and Peggy J. Scott will reprise their roles from the play's New York premiere earlier this spring. Performances will continue through March 3.
Also part of the January and February lineup, Niall Buggy and David Ganly star in Sebastian Barry's On Blueberry Hill, directed by Jim Culleton (January 8–February 3); Emmy winner Gordon Clapp stars in Jack Neary's dark comedy about a family in crisis on Halloween, Trick or Treat, directed by Carol Dunne (January 12–February 24); John Breen's tale of a historic rugby match, Alone It Stands (January 10–27); and Charles Gershman's Edinburgh Fringe hit The Waiting Game, directed by Nathan Wright (February 6–23).
In March, New Light Theater Project presents Imagining Madoff, Deb Margolin's play about incarcerated Ponzi schemer Bernard Madoff, directed by Jerry Heymann (March 1–23); followed by Willy Holtzman's Smart Blonde, starring Burns as Judy Holliday as she charts her experiences from Greenwich Village to Broadway and beyond (directed by Peter Flynn; March 16–April 13).
Wrapping up the winter season March 30–April 14 will be Georgette Kelly's I Carry Your Heart, about two families who form an unlikely connection as they struggle to understand the politics and poetics of organ donation (directed by Cate Caplin).
