Lazarus, the 2015 musical by late genre-bending, pop-rock pioneer David Bowie that played sold-out engagements in New York and London, will premiere in Amsterdam October 13 at the DeLaMar Theater.
Based on Walter Tevis' best-selling novel, The Man Who Fell to Earth—and the subsequent 1976 film in which Bowie starred—Lazarus follows Thomas Newton, a lovelorn alien who has been abandoned on Earth.
Award-winning Dutch actor Gijs Naber will star as Newton in the production that will play a strict, three-month engagement. Michael C. Hall starred in the premiere.
Tony and Olivier Award-winning director Ivo van Hove, who created the New York world-premiere with Bowie, will also direct the Dutch production.
Lazarus has a book by playwright Enda Walsh, and features such songs as “Heroes,” “Absolute Beginners,” “Changes,” “All the Young Dudes,” “This Is Not America,” and the title song, which Bowie wrote expressly for the stage premiere.
Complete casting will be announced at a later date. Robert Fox, who produced the New York and London engagments, is also attached to the Amsterdamn premiere.
Lazarus opened in December 2015 at Off-Broadway's New York Theatre Workshop; tickets to the entire New York run sold out within hours of going on sale. The London production had a limited run at the Kings Cross Theatre which opened in November the following year.
