Carol Burnett’s 2013 best-selling memoir, Carrie and Me, will be adapted for the screen, according to Deadline.
Brothers Ian and Eshom Nelms (Small Town Crime) will pen the screenplay; Burnett is producing the Focus Features title via her Mabel Cat Productions company along with Little Stranger’s Tina Fey and Eric Gurian, as well as Steven Rogers.
In the book, entertainment icon Burnett discusses her daughter’s battle with drug addiction, as well as Hamilton’s successes as an actor, including playing Maureen in the first national tour of Rent. She was also a veteran of the TV series Fame, guest-starred on TV (Walker, Texas Ranger and more), and acted in films (Tokyo Pop, Cool World, Checkered Flag, Shag). She passed away in 2002 at the age of 38 from cancer.
The film will follow Burnett’s life told through her relationship with her late daughter.
The mother-and-daughter pair co-wrote the play Hollywood Arms, based on Burnett's early life, which debuted on Broadway in 2002 under the direction of Harold Prince.
