Producers of the long-running, Tony-winning revival of Chicago announced March 17 that the record-breaking production will celebrate composer John Kander’s 90th birthday at the March 21 performance at the Ambassador Theatre (219 W. 49th St., NYC). That evening's show will feature surprise appearances and special performances for Kander, who will be present.
The Tony-winning composer, currently represented Off-Broadway with his new musical with Greg Pierce, Kid Victory, turns 90 March 18.
The Broadway production of Chicago currently stars Charlotte d’Amboise as Roxie Hart, Lana Gordon as Velma Kelly, Tony Yazbeck as Billy Flynn, Raymond Bokhour as Amos Hart, NaTasha Yvette Williams as Matron “Mama” Morton, and R. Lowe as Mary Sunshine.
With a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by Kander, and lyrics by Ebb, Chicago is now the number one longest-running American musical in Broadway history. Produced by Barry and Fran Weissler, the musical is the winner of six 1997 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Cast Recording.
Directed by Tony Award winner Walter Bobbie and choreographed by Tony winner Ann Reinking, Chicago features set design by John Lee Beatty, costume design by Tony winner William Ivey Long, lighting design by Tony winner Ken Billington, sound design by Scott Lehrer, and casting by Stewart/Whitley.
Kander and the late Fred Ebb created more than a dozen acclaimed Broadway shows, including Cabaret, Chicago, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Steel Pier, Curtains, The Scottsboro Boys, and, most recently, The Visit.
