The Outer Critics Circle, the organization of writers covering New York theatre for out-of-town newspapers, national publications, and other media beyond Broadway, has announced the nominees for the 2016–2017 season April 25. The contenders for the 27 award categories were revealed by six-time Tony nominee Danny Burstein and Tony winner Jane Krakowski in the Oak Room at New York’s Algonquin Hotel.

Anastasia, the new stage musical based on the 1997 animated film, led the nominations with a total of 13, including Outstanding New Broadway Musical, Outstanding Book of a Musical, and Outstanding New Score. The show officially opened on Broadway April 24 at the Broadhurst Theatre. Read reviews here.

Not far behind with a total of 10 nominations was the Broadway revival of Hello, Dolly! starring Bette Midler, who was nominated for Outstanding Actress in a Musical for her performance. The production was also nominated for Outstanding Revival of a Musical, Outstanding Direction, and Outstanding Choreography.

Leading the way for Off-Broadway was The Band's Visit, which garnered seven nominations. Itamar Moses was nominated for Outstanding Book of a Musical, and David Yazbek was nominated for Outstanding New Score. Katrina Lenk, who starred in the new musical at Atlantic Theater Company, received two nods—Outstanding Actress in a Musical for her performance in The Band’s Visit and Outstanding Featured Actress in a Play for her role in Indecent, now playing on Broadway—which received six nominations.

The new Broadway musical Come From Away also received seven nominations, followed by Indecent with six, and Groundhoug Day with five.

Because the Off-Broadway productions of Dear Evan Hansen, In Transit, Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, and Significant Other were evaluated from Outer Critics Circle in previous seasons, they were not considered eligible for this year.

Winners will be announced May 8. The annual Gala Awards Dinner and presentation of awards will be held May 25 at 3 PM at Sardi's Restaurant.

Celebrating its 67th season of bestowing awards of excellence in the field of theatre, the Outer Critics Circle is an association with members affiliated with more than 90 newspapers, magazines, radio and television stations, internet, and theatre publications in America and abroad.
