The new musical Fela!, which began life Off-Broadway, and the revival of La Cage aux Folles, earned 11 nominations a piece, the most of any production of the season.

Memphis, a new musical by Joe DiPietro and David Bryan, earned eight nominations, including Best Musical. The other Musical nominees are American Idiot, Fela! and Million Dollar Quartet.

The Best Play nominees are Sarah Ruhl's In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play, Geoffrey Nauffts' Next Fall, John Logan's Red and Donald Margulies' Time Stands Still.

Two musical revivals that originated at London's Menier Chocolate Factory — A Little Night Music and La Cage aux Folles — were nominated for Best Revival of a Musical. The closed Finian's Rainbow and Ragtime were also nommed.

Fences leads the plays with ten nominations, tying the record for a play set by Coast of Utopia. It's also the most nominations ever earned by a revival. The other 2010 nominees for Best Revival of a Play are Lend Me a Tenor, The Royal Family and A View From the Bridge.

The nominating committee recognized several productions that have already concluded their Broadway runs: Superior Donuts, Hamlet, The Royal Family, Finian's Rainbow, Ragtime, In the Next Room, A View From the Bridge, Time Stands Still and Looped. Actress Jan Maxwell was nominated twice this year: as Supporting Actress in a Play (Lend Me a Tenor) and Leading Actress in a Play (The Royal Family).

The Tony nominating committee recognized Branford Marsalis in the Best Score category for music for the revival of August Wilson's Fences, an unusual case of a play's score being recognized. The revival directed by nominee Kenny Leon offers a jazz-inflected musical prologue.

The Best Score nominees also include Andrew Lippa for The Addams Family, Adam Cork (music) and Lucy Prebble (lyrics) for Enron and David Bryan (music) and Joe DiPietro (lyrics) for Memphis.

Stage veteran Rosemary Harris earned her ninth Tony nomination (Best Featured Actress) for her performance as acting-family matriarch Fanny Cavendish in the Manhattan Theatre Club revival of The Royal Family, having originally been nominated for her Leading Actress performance as Julie Cavendish in the 1976 revival of the George Kaufman-Edna Ferber play.
