On the January 13 episode of The CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, two-time Tony winner Patti LuPone guests alongside multiple Tony nominee Tovah Feldshuh and creator and star Rachel Bloom.
In “Will Scarsdale Like Josh’s Shayna Punim?,” Rebecca (Bloom) pays a visit to the East Coast for a family Bar Mitzvah. This calls for the re-emergence of recurring guest star Feldshuh as Naomi, Rebecca’s overbearing Jewish mother, and the source of much of Rebecca’s anxiety and quest for perfection. The legendary theatre talent doesn’t stop there. LuPone stars as the rabbi of the synagogue congregation.
LuPone sings “Remember That We Suffered,” the ultimate lament in Jewish guilt by Bloom, Adam Schlesinger, Jack Dolgen, Dan Gregor, and Jerome Kurtenbrach, in the episode written by Gregor and Doug Mand and directed by Alex Hardcastle.
As Feldshuh, LuPone, and Bloom join in the hora, the song begins:
Now it’s time to celebrate
Grab a drink and fix a plate
But before you feel too great
Remember that we suffered
Nights like these are filled with glee
Noshing, dancing, singing, Wee!
But we sing in a minor key to
Remember that we suffered
