Ahead of the first Broadway preview, Playbill caught up with the cast and creative team for the new musical War Paint, which stars two-time Tony winners Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole as rival cosmetics giants Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden. Take a look above to see what the two stars and creative team had to say about bringing these powerhouses to the stage.
The musical, which had a sold-out run in Chicago in summer 2016 and became the most successful show in Goodman Theatre history, will begin performances March 7 at the Nederlander Theatre (208 West 41st Street) prior to an official opening night April 6.
War Paint reunites the Grey Gardens creative team of songwriters Scott Frankel and Michael Korie, playwright Doug Wright, and director Michael Greif. Choreography is by Tony Award winner Christopher Gattelli. The musical is inspired by Lindy Woodhead's book War Paint and the documentary film The Powder & the Glory, by Ann Carol Grossman and Arnie Reisman.
The Broadway company will also feature Tony nominees John Dossett as Tommy Lewis— Arden’s husband and chief marketing officer—and Douglas Sills as the ambitious Harry Fleming—Rubinstein’s confidante. The ensemble is made up of Barbara Jo Bednarczuk, Patti Cohenour, Mary Ernster, Tom Galantich, David Girolmo, Joanna Glushak, Chris Hoch, Mary Claire King, Steffanie Leigh, Erik Liberman, Barbara Marineau, Donna Migliaccio, Stephanie Jae Park, Jennifer Rias, Angel Reda, and Tally Sessions.
