The Metropolitan Opera production of Nico Muhly’s Marnie premieres as part of PBS’ Great Performances at the Met series February 1 at 9 PM.
Composer Muhly and librettist Nicholas Wright based their opera on Winston Graham’s 1961 novel about about a mysterious woman who assumes multiple identities, which was later adapted for the screen by Alfred Hitchcock. Directed by Michael Mayer, the production stars Isabel Leonard in the title role.
Originally commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera, Marnie had its world premiere at the English National Opera in 2017 before premiering at the Met in October last year.
In addition to Leonard, the cast of the new York run featured Janie Kelly as Mrs. Rutland, Denyce Graves as Marnie's Mother, Iestyn Davies as Terry Rutland, and Christopher Matlman as Mark Rutland.
