Hot on the kitten heels of opening on Broadway and earning 11 Tony Award nominations, Tootsie is poised to travel the country—and the world.
The musical adaptation of the 1982 comedy will kick off a national tour in fall 2020 at Shea’s Buffalo Theater in New York. The following year, a London production will open in the West End (with Broadway producers Scott Sanders and Carol Fineman partnering with Michael Harrison and David Ian).
In addition to crossing the Atlantic, Dorothy Michaels will cross the Pacific. An Australian engagement of the Scott Ellis-directed staging will open in partnership with Benjamin Lowy Productions and subsequently play New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. On top of that, a Japanese-language production is slated to premiere in Tokyo and tour the country with TOHO Co.
Exact dates and casting for the additional engagements will be announced later.
Composer David Yazbek and book writer Robert Horn both earned Tony nominations for their work on the show, about an out-of-work stage actor who finds success as female alter-ego Dorothy Michaels, as did stars Santino Fontana, Lilli Cooper, Sarah Stiles, and Andy Grotelueschen. The production, currently playing at Broadway’s Marquis Theatre, also features John Behlmann, Julie Halston, Michael McGrath, and Reg Rogers
