Fiorello!, the Pulitzer- and Tony Award-winning musical about New York Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia, is getting a full-scale Off-Broadway revival this fall.
Berkshire Theatre Group (BTG) and Artistic Director/CEO Kate Maguire announced that “due to critical acclaim and record breaking attendance,” BTG’s current production of the musical will transfer to the East 13th Street Theater for a limited run September 2-October 6. BTG’s production of Fiorello! will continue its sold-out run at The Unicorn Theatre in Stockbridge, MA, until July 23.
The transfer will mark the first time Berkshire Theatre Group will be producing a show Off-Broadway. The cast will be announced in the coming weeks.
Directed by Bob Moss, the production has choreography by Michael Callahan and music direction by Evan Zavada.
Fiorello! has music and lyrics by Tony Award winners Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick (whose Fiddler On The Roof and She Loves Me are both currently running on Broadway) and book by Tony Award and Drama Desk winner George Abbott (The Pajama Game, Damn Yankees) and Jerome Weidman (Tenderloin). Harnick won a Special Tony Award this year for lifetime achievement.
Fiorello!, which had a limited New York run as a presentation of the Encores! series in 2013, is memorable for another reason. It produced the only tie in the category of Best Musical in Tony Awards history. It was tied for the 1960 honor with Rodgers and Hammerstein's original The Sound of Music.
