Signature Theatre has announced complete casting for its upcoming production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Jesus Christ Superstar, which will be presented May 9–July 2 in the MAX Theatre.
The production will star Nicholas Edwards (Off-Broadway’s Spamilton) as Jesus of Nazareth, Ari McKay Wilford (Once) as Judas Iscariot, and Natascia Diaz (Signature’s West Side Story) as Mary Magdalene, with Sherri L. Edelen (Signature’s Midwestern Gothic) as King Herod, Sam Ludwig (Signature’s Midwestern Gothic,) as Annas, Michael J. Mainwaring (Arena’s Smokey Joe’s Café) as Peter, Awa Sal Secka (Round House’s Caroline, or Change) as Simon Zealotes, Thomas Adrian Simpson (Signature’s Company) as Caiaphas, and Bobby Smith (Midwestern Gothic) as Pontius Pilate.
Signature Theatre Director of New Works Joe Calarco, who will helm the rock opera, said in a statement, “Jesus Christ Superstar is one of the most iconic musicals in history, and its score changed the sound of Broadway. People are so familiar with the show now that I think we forget how arresting and revolutionary it was, not just in the style of its music, but how lyrically it asks us to look at Jesus as a man, a man with faults. This production will continue Signature’s history of allowing audiences to see classics in a fresh way.”
The ensemble is rounded out by Vincent Kempski, David Landstrom, Calvin McCullough, Solomon Parker III, Jobari Parker-Namdar, Chris Sizemore, Harrison Smith, Korinn Walfall, and Kara Tameika Watkins.
