British playwright Mark Ravenhill (Shopping and Fucking) will stage The Octoroon, which Jacobs-Jenkins (Neighbors) has been developing over the past several seasons. The public performances are the culmination of a week-long workshop.
The new production, which Soho Rep describes as "radically reworked," is based on Dion Boucicault's 1859 melodrama that "examines race, slavery, gender and the 19th century's perception of these themes."
In addition to Sengbloh (Hair, Wicked, Fela!), the cast will include William Jackson Harper (The Total Bent), John Patrick Doherty, Nick Choksi (Invasion!), Michelle Beck (Love's Labor's Lost), Jocelyn Bioh (Neighbors), Barrett Doss (Burning) and Lisa Joyce (The Ugly One).
Soho Rep also announced that Clybourne Park director Pam MacKinnon will stage the May 17-18 Studio presentations of Sylvan Oswald's Profanity at the Robert Moss Theater.
Upcoming Writer/Director Lab readings include Jackie Sibblies Drury's Really Really Really Really Really, directed by David F. Chapman, on May 7. All readings are free and open to the Public. Visit SohoRep.
