Decca Broadway will release — for the first time on CD — the original motion picture soundtrack of Flower Drum Song, the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that returns to Broadway this season with an all-new book by David Henry Hwang. The 1961 film, directed by Henry Koster, cast Nancy Kwan as Linda Low, James Shigeta as Wang Ta, Benson Fong as Wang, Jack Soo as Sammy Fong, Juanita Hall as Madame "Auntie" Liang, Reiko Sato as Helen Chao, Patrick Adiarte as Wang San, Kam Tong as Doctor Li, Victor Sen Yung as Frankie Wing, Soo Yong as Madame Fong and Miyoshi Umeki as Mei Li. John Dodson provided the singing voice for Doctor Li, and Marilyn Horne sang for Helen Chao.
The classic Rodgers and Hammerstein score features such tunes as "I Enjoy Being a Girl," "Love, Look Away" and "A Hundred Million Miracles." The Decca Broadway release features a bonus track of the late Rosemary Clooney singing "Love, Look Away," which will be performed in the upcoming Broadway production by Tony Award winner Lea Salonga. The new release also boasts new liner notes by David Henry Hwang and rare production photos.
Flower Drum Song will be in stores beginning Tuesday, Sept. 24. Past Decca releases include Oklahoma!, Carousel, Porgy and Bess, Annie Get Your Gun, Babes in Toyland, Desert Song and the 1963 London cast recording of The Boys From Syracuse.
