It appears Rita Moreno will not be bringing the barrio to the big screen. Though reported earlier by The Hollywood Reporter that the stage and screen legend would appear in the film adaptation of In the Heights, a representative for the actor has confirmed that she is not attached to the project.
Talks had previously taken place for Moreno to board the project; the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony winner would have taken on the role of neighborhood matriarch Abuela Claudia.
The Warner Bros. title, directed by Jon M. Chu and featuring a screenplay by original book writer Quiara Alegría Hudes, is slated to arrive in theatres June 26, 2020.
As previously announced, Hamilton alum Anthony Ramos is circling the project to play the central character Usnavi, the part originated by composer Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda earned his first Tony Award for his score in 2008.
