Rita Moreno is preparing to take over the role of Norma Desmond in the London production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard, according to a report in the newsletter Theatrical Index.

Peter Thompson, a spokesman for the London production, said the booking has not been confirmed.

The report said Moreno, who played Anita in the film version of West Side Story and who won a Best Supporting Actress Tony Award for Terrence McNally's The Ritz, will play Norma Sept. 9 through Nov. 2 at the Adelphi Theatre in the West End.

Moreno has won the Oscar (West Side Story), Tony (The Ritz), Emmy (The Rockford Files and The Muppets) and Grammy, as well as a Golden Globe, Joseph Jefferson and Sarah Siddons awards.

In recent years she has worked extensively in television, appearing in the series "9 to 5," "B.L. Stryker," "The Electric Company," "Top of the Heap" and "The Cosby Mysteries." She returned to the stage in 1995, appearing in Anne Meara's After/Play off- Broadway.
