Gettelfinger began in the production in the role of Maria. She was recently announced to make the daring aerial entrance in the "A Call From the Vatican" number as Carla, while a new start date for Elfman was being determined. The New York daily now reports "the Roundabout has decided to give the role to Gettelfinger." The nonprofit has of yet made no official announcement about any such change in casting.
The revival's director David Leveaux postponed Elfman's start (originally set for Oct. 7). As stated in a release, "Leveaux felt it appropriate that since Ms. Elfman joined the production later than the other incoming actors, she be allowed the same amount of rehearsal time."
Elfman was set to make her Broadway debut in Nine with new Nine stars John Stamos (who replaced Antonio Banderas), Eartha Kitt (assumed Chita Rivera's role) and Marni Nixon (in for Mary Beth Peil). The actors joined current stars Mary Stuart Masterson and Rebecca Luker in the Tony Award winning revival.
Gettelfinger has appeared on Broadway in The Boys From Syracuse, Anything Goes and Seussical. Other credits include Fosse (national tour), Tenderloin, Carnival (Encores!) and Company (Helen Hayes Theatre).
Prior to Nine, Elfman — known to television audiences as the wild wife on "Dharma and Greg" — was mentioned for the title role in the Broadway-bound revival of Sweet Charity. Marisa Tomei was later announced for the show's workshop, but, in an ironic twist, was replaced by Krakowski. Also a classically trained ballerina, Elfman has appeared in such films as "Grosse Pointe Blank," "Can't Hardly Wait," "Edtv," "Keeping the Faith" and "Town and Country." She will be seen next in "Looney Tunes: Back in Action," set for a Nov. 14 release.
The new David Leveaux staging of Maury Yeston and Arthur Kopit's Nine began at Broadway's Eugene O'Neill Theatre March 21 and opened April 10. The show, originally scheduled through June 29, will end its limited run Jan. 4, 2004.
