Los Angeles Opera General Director Plácido Domingo will take the stage in two mainstage productions at the company, beginning with the 2018–2019 season opener Don Carlo.
Performances of the Verdi opera run September 22–October 14. James Conlon will conduct a cast that includes Domingo as Rodrigo, Ramón Vargas in the title role, and Ana María Martínez as Elisabeth de Valois. The Ian Judge production last played the West Coast venue in 2006.
The company premiere of Philip Glass’ Satyagraha will follow October 20–November 11, marking the completion of LA Opera’s presentation of Glass’ “Portrait Trilogy” (after Einstein on the Beach and Akhnaten). Sean Panikkar will star as Gandhi in the production, which was first developed as a co-production between the Metropolitan Opera and English National Opera.
The season also includes company premieres of Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito (March 2–24, 2019) and Penella’s El Gato Montés: The Wildcat (April 27–May 19), the latter featuring Domingo in the title role of Juanillo. Rounding out the season are revivals of Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel (November 17–December 15) and Verdi’s La Traviata (June 1–22), the latter directed by Marta Domingo.
