Miller, last seen as Dionne in the Public Theater's staging of Hair in Central Park, will again star as the nun on the run in the Broadway production of Sister Act The Musical, which will be directed by Tony Award-winning director Jerry Zaks.
Whoopi Goldberg, who also serves as a producer of the stage musical, created the role in the film. She produces Sister Act along with Stage Entertainment. The production concluded its London run Oct. 30 at the Palladium Theatre.
Based on the 1992 film of the same title, Sister Act The Musical will begin previews March 24, 2011, at the Broadway Theatre and will officially open April 20.
Sister Act has a score by Academy Award winner Menken and Glenn Slater. Tony Award-nominated playwright Douglas Carter Beane (Xanadu, The Little Dog Laughed) previously told Playbill.com that he is in negotiations to pen a new book to the musical for Broadway. The London production featured a book by Emmy Award-winning writers Cheri and Bill Steinkellner. The duo are still billed as authors of the book for the Broadway production.
The Broadway production will reunite the original London creative team, including choreographer Anthony Van Laast, scenic designer Klara Zieglerova, costume designer Lez Brotherston, lighting designer Natasha Katz and sound designer Mick Potter. Michael Kosarin will serve as musical supervisor, with dance music arrangements by Mark Hummel, orchestrations by Doug Besterman and electronic music by Andy Barrett.
In addition to the Broadway run, a German production of Sister Act will bow in December, with productions also planned in Australia, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Italy, France and Spain in the coming months.
According to producers, "When disco diva Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder, she is put in protective custody in the one place cops are sure she won't be found - a convent! Disguised as a nun, she finds herself at odds with both the rigid lifestyle and an uptight Mother Superior. Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Deloris breathes new life into the church and community, but in doing so blows her cover. Soon the gang are giving chase, only to find themselves up against Deloris and the power of her new found Sister Hood."
