Bright Star and Parks and Recreation actor Paul Schneider completes the cast of Young Jean Lee's Straight White Men on Broadway. Schneider will play the role of Matt; he joins the previously announced Kate Bornstein as Person in Charge #1, Josh Charles as Jake, Ty Defoe as Person in Charge #2, Armie Hammer as Drew, and Tom Skerritt as Ed.
Straight White Men will play the Hayes Theater on Broadway, directed by Anna D. Shapiro and produced by Second Stage Theater. Performances will begin June 29 ahead of a July 23 opening.
The play subverts the traditional father-son drama as Ed and his three adult sons ring in Christmas by contemplating the value of straight white men in a society driven by conversations of identity and privilege.
Scheider is making his Broadway debut in Straight White Men. His film and television credits include The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Café Society, Water for Elephants, George Washington, Les Bien-Amies, Pretty Bird, Elizabeth Town, All the Real Girls, The Family Stone, Lars & the Real Girl, and The Newsroom.
Straight White Men received its world premiere in April 2014 at Columbus, Ohio’s Wexner Center for the Arts. A New York premiere followed later that year at Off-Broadway’s Public Theater, followed by a Chicago debut at the Steppenwolf Theatre in 2017, directed by the playwright.
The new production will mark the first time a play written by an Asian woman has been produced on Broadway, and will be the second show to play the newly renovated Hayes (following Kenneth Lonergan's Lobby Hero, which recently wrapped up performances).
The Broadway production of Straight White Men will feature scenic design by Todd Rosenthal, costume design by Suttirat Larlab, lighting design by Donald Holder, sound design by M.L. Dogg, choreography by Faye Driscoll, and casting by Telsey + Company.
Next year, Carnegie Hall's house band will perform Bernstein’s “Kaddish” Symphony, unfinished works by Schubert, and the final concert of Conductor Bernard Labadie.
