The 1960 telecast of the staged version of Peter Pan, starring Mary Martin, will kick off the Musicals on Television series Oct. 1 at 2 PM. Directed for television by Vincent J. Donehue, Peter Pan also features Cyril Ritchard, Margalo Gillmore and Sondra Lee. The Broadway production was staged and choreographed by Jerome Robbins, with music and lyrics by Moose Charlap and Carolyn Leigh, and additional music and lyrics by Jule Styne, Betty Comden and Adolph Green. Immediately following, excerpts will be shown from a 1988 Paley Center seminar with Martin, in which she reminisces about the 1960 telecast.
The 1976 film "Hallmark Hall of Fame: Peter Pan" will be seen Oct. 1 at 4 PM. The television adaptation of the J.M. Barrie tale includes music and lyrics by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse. Directed by Dwight Hemion and choreographed by Michael Kidd, "Peter Pan" features Mia Farrow, Danny Kaye, Virginia McKenna and Paula Kelly, with narration by John Gielgud.
The 1957 version of "Cinderella," starring Julie Andrews, will screen Oct. 2 at 2 PM. The only collaboration for television by composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II, "Cinderella" is directed by Ralph Nelson and choreographed by Jonathan Lucas. Also featured are Edie Adams, Kaye Ballard, Alice Ghostley, Ilka Chase, Jon Cypher, Dorothy Stickney and Howard Lindsay.
"Cindy," the 1978 film starring Charlaine Woodard and set in 1943 Harlem, will screen Oct. 2 at 4 PM. Featuring songs by Stan Daniels, "Cindy" is directed by William A. Graham and choreographed by Donald McKayle. The cast features Clifton Davis as Joe Prince, Mae Mercer, Nell Carter, Alaina Reed and Cleavant Derricks.
Bill Rudman, host of Sirius XM Satellite Radio’s "On the Aisle," will be on hand to introduce the Oct. 2 screenings. The Paley Center has partnered with NYMF each season since the festival first began in 2004.
