Hartford Stage artistic director Michael Wilson stages the production, which will officially open Feb. 27 and run through April 4. The production has the largest advance sale of any show in the history of the Connecticut theatre company.
Emmy nominee Modine is joined onstage by Devon Abner (Arthur Boo Radley), Hallie Foote (adult Jean Louise Finch), Olivia Scott (Scout), Henry Hodges (Jem), Pat Bowie (Calpurnia), Jennifer Harmon (MaudieAtkinson/Stephanie Crawford/Mrs. Dubose), Nafe Katter (Mr. Nathan Radley), Andrew Shipman (Dill), Nafe Katter (Judge Taylor), Charles Turner (Reverend Sykes), Virginia Kull (Mayella Ewell), Mike Boland (Bob Ewell), Devon Abner (Mr. Gilmer), Doug Lyons (Tom Robinson), Daralyn Jay (Helen Robinson) and James DeMarse (Sherriff Heck Tate/Walter Cunningham).
The townspeople of the Southern-set work are portrayed by C. Zakiah Barksdale, William A. Thomas, Tom Libonate, Deirdre Garrett, Rob Pawlikowski, Justin FullerConnor Fitzgerald, Larkin Meehan, Jordan Cyr, Jacob Entenman, Peter G. Garrity, Joshua Jackson and Rodney D. Edwards.
Mockingbird has designs by Jeff Cowie (set design), David C. Wollard (costume design), Rui Rita (lighting design) and John Gromada (sound design).
According to press notes, "To Kill a Mockingbird is a tender portrait of a southern town, brimming with powerful lessons of tolerance, justice and quiet heroism. Scout and Jem are growing up in the Deep South during the 1930s depression. Their idyllic childhood is jolted with the realization that prejudice and bigotry rule in their small town when their father, a lawyer of principle and integrity, is asked to defend a young black man falsely accused of raping a white woman." Matthew Modine most recently appeared on the London stage in the Robert Altman production of Arthur Miller's Resurrection Blues. He earned Emmy and Golden Globe Award nominations for his work in 1993's "And the Band Played On." His extensive screen credits also include "Weeds," "The Bedbord Diaries," "Le Divorce," "Private School," "Streamers," "The Hotel New Hampshire," "Full Metal Jacket," "Orphans," "Gross Anatomy," "Pacific Heights," "Wind," "Short Cuts," "Jacob," "Bye Bye, Love," "Fluke," "Any Given Sunday," "Flowers for Algernon," "Nobody's Baby," "In the Shadows" and "The Shipment" and "Hitler: The Rise of Evil."
