Mexican telenovela actor Mauricio Martinez steps into the role of Emilio Estefan in Broadway's On Your Feet! beginning July 11 at the Marquis Theatre.
Martinez, taking over for Ektor Rivera, will continue through August 13. Rivera will return for the final week; the Broadway production of the Gloria Estefan bio-musical concludes its nearly two-year run August 20.
Martinez will also co-star in the musical's national tour. Joining him as Gloria will be Christie Prades, who currently appears as a swing in the Broadway company.
The tour will begin in Buffalo, New York, September 22 prior to celebrating its official opening in the Estefans’ home city of Miami, Florida, October 5. Additional stops in the 80-week itinerary include Los Angeles, Houston, Philadelphia, Boston, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Denver.
Martinez stars on NBC Universo’s El Vato, which returns for a second season this summer. He has appeared on stages in Mexico in such shows as Beauty and the Beast, Saturday Night Fever, and The Drowsy Chaperone. He also starred as Che in Kansas City Repertory’s Evita last year. Born in Miami to Cuban immigrant parents, Prades understudies the role of Gloria on Broadway as a swing. Her regional credits include In the Heights and West Side Story.
Ana Villafañe, who created the role of Gloria, continues in the role on Broadway.
