Marinda Anderson (Teenage Dick, Far From Heaven), Genevieve Angelson (Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, The Upside), and Dan Daily (The Rivals, Seabiscuit) will join Debra Jo Rupp in the Off-Broadway premiere of Bekah Brunstetter's The Cake at Manhattan Theatre Club next month.
As previously announced, the Manhattan Theatre Club production will be directed by Artistic Director Lynne Meadow and will begin performances February 12 at New York City Center – Stage I, ahead of a March 5 opening.
In The Cake, a North Carolina baker (Rupp) is forced to re-examine her deeply held beliefs when her late best friend’s daughter asks her to make a cake for her lesbian wedding. Rupp is reprising the role of Della that she originated at Los Angeles' Echo Theatre and played at Barrington Stage Company and the Geffen Playhouse.
Brunstetter's other plays include Going to a Place Where You Already Are, Cutie and Bear, A Long and Happy Life, Oohrah!, and Be A Good Little Widow. She is a producer on NBC’s This is Us, and has previously written for MTV’s Underemployed, ABC Family’s Switched at Birth, and Starz’s American Gods.
The creative team for The Cake includes John Lee Beatty (scenic design), Tom Broecker (costume design), Philip S. Rosenberg (lighting design), and John Gromada (sound design and original music).
