Manhattan Theatre Club’s American premiere of The Children, a new play by Olivier Award winner Lucy Kirkwood (Chimerica), celebrates its official opening December 12. The acclaimed production from London’s Royal Court began performances on Broadway November 28.

James Macdonald directs The Children at MTC’s Samuel J. Friedman Theater. London cast members Francesca Annis (BBC’s Cranford), Olivier Award nominee Ron Cook (Juno and the Paycock), and Olivier Award winner Deborah Findlay (Stanley) are reprising their roles on Broadway.

In Kirkwood’s dark and surprising play, three retired nuclear engineers reunite in a remote cottage on the British coast. Outside, the world is reeling from a disaster, raising questions about who is responsible and what the solution looks like. The Children explores themes of sacrifice, truth, and the environment.

The Children received a Best Play nomination for the 2017 Evening Standard Theatre Awards.

The production features scenic and costume design by Miriam Buether, lighting design by Peter Mumford, and sound design by Max Pappenheim.
