The national trade association for the Broadway industry will now be known as The Broadway League. The change in name was approved by the League's Board of Governors. The new title "more aptly reflects the composition of the League's membership," according to a Dec. 18 press statement.
The League's membership is "not limited to theatre owners and producers, but includes Broadway presenters, general managers and other Broadway industry professionals." The name change process, which will take several months to complete, begins immediately.
In a statement League executive director Charlotte St. Martin said, "As Broadway has a main street named after it in over 25 cities (that we know of), and as we have a Broadway series in over 150 cities, it is clear that Broadway really is the longest street in America.....making our new name even more appropriate across the country."
