Tony nominees Kate Baldwin and Bryce Pinkham will star in the world premiere of Superhero, a new musical by Tom Kitt and John Logan. The production, directed by Jason Moore, will begin January 31, 2019, as part of Second Stage Theater’s 2018–2019 Off-Broadway season.
As previously announced, the company’s 40th anniversary season will include Broadway productions of Young Jean Lee’s Straight White Men and Harvey Fierstein’s Torch Song, both at Second Stage’s newly renovated Broadway home, the Hayes.
The Off-Broadway season at the Tony Kiser theatre will kick off October 2 with the world premiere of Dear Evan Hansen Tony winner Steven Levenson’s Days of Rage, directed by Trip Cullman (who directs Second Stage’s current Broadway production of Lobby Hero). The play follows a group of revolutionaries in upstate New York in the late 1960sSuperhero unites Tony winners Kitt (Next to Normal, Tony-nominated this season for SpongeBob SquarePants) and Logan (Red), who together tell a new story about a fractured family, a mysterious stranger in apartment 4-B, and an unexpected hero. In addition to Baldwin (Hello, Dolly!) and Pinkham (A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder), the cast will feature Kyle McArthur, who makes his professional theatre debut after participating in a developmental reading of the piece at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center last year.
The season will also include a production of Christopher Shinn’s Dying City, directed by Lila Neugebauer. Performances will begin in late July 2019. The play, set in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks and the war in Iraq, explores the interwoven stories of a widow, her late husband, and his twin brother.
A fourth Off-Broadway title will be announced at a later date.
