Set in a South American jail cell, the play by late Argentine dramatist Puig (1932–1990), focuses on two cellmates: Marxist rebel Valentin (Evans), punished for his ideals, and romantic fantasist Molina (Glen) convicted for his sexuality. Glen was nominated for this year's Olivier Awards for his portrayal of John Proctor in the Royal Shakespeare Company's Arthur Miller-tribute production of The Crucible. His previous Donmar appearance was in 1998 opposite Nicole Kidman in David Hare's The Blue Room. Other stage credits include the National production of A Sreetcar Named Desire with Glenn Close.
Piug's play is best known as the 1985 movie starring Raul Julia and William Hurt, and as a musical by Kander and Ebb.
Directed by Charlotte Westenra (Darfur–How Long is Never), the Donmar version features a new translation by Allan Baker.
