The singing actor, who recently released his debut solo recording "Goodtimenation," will portray chimney sweep Bert, the role created on the West End stage by Gavin Lee.
Lee, as previously announced, will co-star in the Broadway production of Mary Poppins, which is scheduled to begin performances at the New Amsterdam Theatre Oct. 14 with Ashley Brown in the title role.
Gavin Creel was most recently on Broadway playing Jean-Michel in the revival of La Cage aux Folles at the Marquis Theatre. He portrayed Hollis Bessemer in Sondheim and John Weidman's Bounce and starred as Jimmy in the Tony-winning musical Thoroughly Modern Millie (Tony nomination for Best Actor in a Musical). The actor was also seen in the City Center Encores! mounting of Hair and the Off-Broadway production of Bat Boy. His other theatrical credits include Honk!, Fame and the workshops of Spring Awakening, Hairspray and Wicked. Creel was also part of the cast of the TV films "Eloise at the Plaza" and "Eloise at Christmastime."
The West End company of Mary Poppins currently features Scarlett Strallen as Mary Poppins, Aden Gillett as George Banks, Eliza Lumley as Winifred Banks, Sarah Flind as Mrs. Brill, Louise Gold as Miss Andrew, Diane Langton as Birdwoman, Ray C. Davis as Park Keeper and Andrew Pepper as Robertson Ay.
