Zak Orth will play Clinton campaign strategist Mark Penn with Peter Francis James as Barack in the upcoming Broadway premiere of Lucas Hnath’s Hillary and Clinton, which will co-star Tony and Emmy Award winners Laurie Metcalf and John Lithgow. Joe Mantello will direct the production, which begins previews March 16, 2019, ahead of an April 18 opening at the Golden Theatre.
The play aims to explore the politics of marriage and gender roles as Hillary, a former First Lady, is at odds with her husband Bill and her campaign manager Mark as she attempts to salvage her bid for President of the United States during the 2008 primaries. Sound familiar?
The play premiered at Chicago's Victory Gardens Theater in 2016 before heading to Philadelphia, Richmond, and Dallas. In each of those productions, the role of Hillary was played by a black woman.
The Scott Rudin production will feature sets by Chloe Lamford, costumes by Ann Roth, and lighting design by Hugh Vanstone.
