Sydney Cole Alexander (She’s Gotta Have It) will lead the world premiere of Ray Yamanouchi's New Light New Voices Award-winning play, The American Tradition. The debut production will be presented by New Light Theater Project at 13th Street Repertory Company with direction by Axel Avin, Jr.
The limited run of The American Tradition is scheduled for January 25–February 16, 2019.
Completing the cast will be Hunter Canning (War Horse), Tabatha Gayle (Misogynoir ), Alex Herrald (Life and Times ), and Martin K. Lewis (TADA! Youth Theater alum, Off-Broadway debut).
Set in Antebellum America with an absurd and Brechtian twist, The American Tradition follows Eleanor (Alexander)—cross-dressing as a white planter—and her husband, Bill (Lewis)—pretending to be her loyal servant— as they attempt to escape to the free state of Pennsylvania.
The design team for the world premiere will be made up of Brian Dudkiewicz (scenic design), Elaine Wong (lighting design), Samantha Rose Lind (costume design), Enrico de Trizio (sound design), and Leila Ben-Abdallah (prop design). The fight director is Leighton Samuels, and the production stage manger is Chelsea Friday.
