Elsie Fisher, the breakout star from Bo Burnham's critically acclaimed film Eighth Grade, is tapped to star in a film version of the musical The Shaggs, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Inspired by a real-life story, The Shaggs tells the story of three (not particularly musically talented) teenagers from New Hampshire who made rock 'n' roll history.
With a story by Joy Gregory, John Langs, and Gunnar Madsen, the musical The Shaggs: Philosophy of the World features a book and lyrics by Gregory, and music and lyrics by Gunnar Madsen. The show debuted at Playwrights Horizons in 2011 in a co-production with New York Theatre Workshop, directed by Langs and featuring a cast that included Peter Friedman and Annie Golden.
According to THR, the movie adaptation will be a musical feature film directed by Ken Kwapis (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Happyish), with a screenplay by Gregory.
