Frozen, the latest Disney musical to play Broadway, will make its Australian debut in July 2020 at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.
The production of the musical based on the 2013 animated hit film will be the first international staging of Frozen, which continues on Broadway at the St. James Theatre. Casting will be announced at a later date.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said in a statement that Frozen is "one of the most highly acclaimed and sought after musicals currently in production." She added, "It is a global cultural sensation, and we are thrilled to have secured the musical adaptation for Sydney.”
The Disney Theatrical production, directed by Michael Grandage, opened on Broadway in March 2018, subsequently earning three Tony nominations, including one for Best Musical.
The two-act musical is the first Frozen adaptation to expand upon the original 2013 animated hit. The film’s co-director and screenwriter Jennifer Lee returned to pen the book, while the Oscar-winning, husband-and-wife songwriting team of Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez wrote a dozen new songs to join the movie’s familiar numbers.
