Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo has been tapped to star in a new movie musical inspired by the fable of Rip van Winkle. The film, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is based on an idea by Tony nominee and fellow Broadway-turned-movie star Josh Gad, who will produce the Warner Bros. project.
The movie, riffing on the story of a Colonial American who sleeps through the Revolution, will feature a script by Amanda Idoko and original songs by Kate Anderson and Elissa Samsel, who also composed the Gad-led animated short Olaf’s Frozen Adventure.
Erivo joins Gad on the creative team as executive producer, as well as Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback and Ryan Halprin.
Since winning a Tony for her breakout performance in the Broadway revival of The Color Purple, Erivo has gone on to appear on the big screen in Widows and Bad Times at the El Royale. She will next star in the upcoming Harriet Tubman biopic, Harriet, with the films Chaos Walking and Needle in a Timestack also in the works.
