The upcoming Broadway revival of David Henry Hwang’s M. Butterfly has found a theatre. The production, starring Oscar nominee Clive Owen and directed by Tony winner Julie Taymor, will begin performances October 7 at the Cort Theatre, where it is set to officially open October 26.
The announcement comes the week after the Tony-nominated Indecent, the Cort’s current occupant, posted a June 25 closing notice.
Tickets will go on sale to the public July 6, following an American Express pre-sale running June 21–30.
The 1988 play follows the relationship between French diplomat Rene Gallimard (Owen) and a mysterious Beijing opera singer named Song Liling. Song's true nature, however, is unbeknownst to Gallimard, and over the course of more than 20 years, revelations of identity and allegiance are unraveled. The new staging will incorporate new material inspired by the real-life affair that inspired the play.
Additional casting (including the role of Song Liling) and design team will be announced at a later date.
