Chris Gethard's solo show, Chris Gethard: Career Suicide, will air on HBO May 6. The play debuted Off-Broadway last fall at the Lynn Redgrave Theater, where it received critical acclaim and extended its limited engagement.
In Chris Gethard: Career Suicide, the comedian offers an honest and raw portrayal of living with mental illness, thoughts of suicide, and alcoholism. The show, written and performed by Gethard, was directed by Kimberly Senior (Disgraced) and produced by Judd Apatow. Performances began October 5, 2016, following an acclaimed, sold-out run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
The HBO special was taped at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center on February 11. The filmed production, which will air May 6 at 10 PM, will be executive produced by Apatow, Gethard, Brian Stern, Mike Berkowitz, Anna Wenger, and Marcus Raboy, and directed by Senior.
“People have expressed to me that making comedy about depression is insensitive. I vehemently disagree,” said Gethard in an earlier press statement. “We need to start laughing about this stuff, so maybe we can finally be comfortable talking about it afterwards. I just try to make sure my jokes come from an honest place, and unfortunately for me being honest means copping to the fact that I once crashed a car on purpose.”
